Aspiring managers tackle refurbishment project

Six ambitious Hanson employees based in the north and midlands carried out a charity project in Cumbria as part of a training programme aimed at creating engaging managers.

The team rolled up their sleeves to begin the refurbishment of a woodland bothy in the Lake District for the Calvert Trust, a charity which gives disabled and disadvantaged people the opportunity to experience challenging outdoor activities. When complete, the bothy will provide accommodation for visitors to the trust’s recreational centre on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake.

Team leader Callum Allison, technical assistant in the national cement laboratory in Scunthorpe, said: “Our task was to completely empty the building of all fixtures and fittings including kitchen units, bathroom units, door frames and even a ceiling in the living room.

“Now that it has been gutted, specialist contractors will move in to complete the refurbishment, including widening doorways to allow better access for wheelchair users.”

Callum was joined on the project by Scunthorpe lab technical assistant Danny Eccles, purchasing contracts manager Louise Stirzaker and Sellafield concrete plant supervisor Roger Whittam, along with Ketton-based LEAD apprentice Rob Mould and cement supervisor Craig Harmer.

Not content with the hard graft, the team also took part in a sponsored abseil at the centre and raised over £850 to put towards the bothy project.

Calvert Trust facilities manager Aidie Jones said: “A massive thank you to the Hanson team for their hard work, enthusiasm and expertise.”
