Air leak survey action saves £9,000 in energy costs

Improvements to the compressed air system at Port Talbot Regen plant have created annual energy cost savings of around £9,000.

Compressed air systems are dynamic with many wearing parts so it was decided to run a leak demonstration project at the south Wales works.

The site was surveyed by specialist contractor Hayley Fluid Power, who collaborated with other providers to develop a best practice or gold standard specification. The subsequent reports produced by the team included information on leak volume, energy loss and potential cost savings, and also contained photographic evidence and estimated remediation costs.

Site manager John Price and electrical supervisor Harvey Fletcher worked closely with the contactor to implement the recommended improvement works. The impact on energy costs was immediate and the estimated annual saving of £9,000 represents a nominal payback of around 13 weeks, helping to keep Port Talbot as one of our best performing sites.
